
The U.S. Department of Education has announced the availability of $10 million in Promise Neighborhood funding. According to the Department, "The $10 million…will support up to 20 organizations with one year of funding to plan for the implementation of cradle-to-career services designed to improve educational outcomes for students in distressed neighborhoods."
President Obama and U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, hailed the grants as a first step toward lifting families out of poverty and creating high-quality programs and schools in distressed neighborhoods. The FY 2011 budget includes $210 million to support 5-year grants to implement the plans.
The Promise Neighborhood program is based on the Harlem Children's Zone that has had a significant and positive impact on the educational outcomes of students. The Department of Education is hosting a series of webinars to help applicants through the process. Grant applications must be received by the Department of Education by June 25, 2010.
