AASA: How America's Public Schools Continue to Feel the Impact of the Economic Downturn

The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) has conducted research and prepared a series of reports regarding how ARRA and stimulus funding have impacted schools. The most recent report, "A Cliff Hanger: How America's Public Schools Continue to Feel the Impact of the Economic Downturn" summarizes surveys conducted with 453 school administrators from 45 states. The survey repeated questions from previous surveys and also included new questions relating to competitive grants.

Survey responses from school administrators regarding FY 2011-11 show:

  • Budget cuts will be higher than they were in the previous 2 years.
  • Personnel reductions will be more severe.
  • Class size, length of school week, summer school, transportation, and extracurricular activities may all feel a negative impact due to budget constraints.

School administrators, especially in rural districts, are concerned about the role of competitive grants and the amount of resources required to complete the applications.
