MCH carefully defines each institution type because the needs vary greatly among institution
types. For example, Schools and School Districts are in the same SIC code yet they have very
different functions. Schools teach and School Districts administer. Likewise, adult day care
centers and domestic violence programs are grouped under the same Social Services SIC code in
general B2B databases yet they have very different needs.
Traditional B2B data elements such as annual revenue or number of employees are not relevant
when assessing the value of an institutional target. To be successful in the institutional market
you need to be concerned with data elements such as the number of beds in a hospital, the
congregation size of a church, or enrollment and demographic data for a school. When marketers rely
solely on a general B2B database to reach institutions, they risk under-exploiting the revenue
opportunity because institutions may either be missing or spread across multiple SIC codes.
